Our Philosophy

True jiu-jitsu is not a “sport”. Although there are many opportunities for sports-minded individuals to explore that side of the art, this was not the vision of Grand Master Helio Gracie. The essence of jiu-jitsu as conceived by the Grand Master was rooted entirely in self-defense, period. This unique system offers a person the ability to defend themself against an attacker, regardless of size or strength, by using the key principles of timing, technique, and leverage. We strive to continue this time-honored method of training, emphasizing the core concepts and principles to promote an overall understanding of the art as opposed to simply showing the most popular move on YouTube. Many of these newer, “flashier” techniques may be impressive in friendly competition however they often leave one’s self in a dangerous and vulnerable positions from a true self defense perspective.

Through proper understanding and application of the core principles and concepts taught by Professor Xavier, you will begin to see how jiu-jitsu enables and empowers people to face their fears both on and off the training mat. It is the transition and application of these principles to your everyday life that makes jiu-jitsu so much more than a sport, a system of self-defense, or even an art; it is very much a way of life.
